CEDAR RAPIDS – The West High boys golf team had more than just a hilly course to play through on Tuesday at the Crandic Invitational.

Mother Nature also posed a challenge with oppressive heat and humidity.

"It really dries them out,” West coach Don Bristow said of his golfers playing in the heat. “You’re walking and carry your bag, you’ve got to watch them real close.

“I always have water on the golf cart and I give them water whenever I see them.”

West finished with a team score of 288 as sophomore Kyle Spence and senior Kyle Jenkins led the way with each recording a round of 69 on a course in which 63 was par.

West finished sixth in the team scoring out of eight teams, one spot ahead of City High, which shot a 304.

Campbell Johnson led City High with his 72, his best round of the season while Will McIntire and Devin Rutt each carded 77s for the Little Hawks.

Cedar Rapids Washington won the meet, which was held at the Airport National Golf Course, with a team score of 251. Cedar Rapids Prairie finished second with a score of 263.

Bristow was pleased with his team’s performance, considering all the circumstances, including the youth on his roster.

West’s lineup includes two sophomores, a junior and two seniors.

“They did a good job,” Bristow said. “We’ve just got to get over that hump. We’re doing all right. I’m happy with them. We’re awfully young.”

Bristow said many of the golfers, including some on his team, suffered from cramps throughout the meet.

He took precautions by having 24 bottles of water and 18 bottles of Gatorade available for his golfers when the meet started Tuesday morning. He only had three bottles of water and no Gatorade left when the meet ended in the afternoon.

“We still had cramps,” Bristow said.
