West High Girls Win Prairie Invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS – Overnight rain showers made for a soggy course Saturday but couldn’t keep the West High girls cross country team from starting the season strong.

West High placed four runners in the top 12 on its way to the team title at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational, finishing 15 points in front of runner-up Cedar Falls.

West High Junior Bailey Nock

Bailey Nock finished third in 20:07 and Claire Ronnebaum was sixth in 20:23 as West High finished with 50 points, 15 points better than the runner-up Tigers.

Gabby Skopec added a 10th place finish in 20:50 and Jessie Skopec was 12th in 20:52 as the third-ranked Women of Troy topped the 20-team field that featured five teams that appeared in the top 12 of the Class 4A preseason poll by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches.

Ninth-ranked Cedar Falls was second followed by No. 8 Waukee and No. 12 Linn-Mar.

Class 2A top-ranked Monticello was fifth and 3A No. 1 Pella was seventh.

Solon finished 18th with 486 points followed by Clear Creek Amana with 531 points.

Sophomore Kaylie Barker placed 32nd in 21:35 to lead Clear Creek Amana while Sophie Nicol finished 66th in 22:42 to pace Solon.
